\"fake\"Just recently on Facebook, I’ve been quoted a famous text, verses which for\u00a0hundreds of years were\u00a0a favorite trinitarian proof text<\/strong>, seemingly the “smoking gun” verse that was needed – 1 John 5:7-8<\/a>.\u00a0Here’s how it reads in the King James Bible:<\/p>\n

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. \u00a0And there are three that bear witness in earth<\/em><\/strong>, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Scholars refer to the parts in bold\u00a0as the\u00a0Comma Johanneum. <\/em>The only problem is that this is demonstrably a corruption<\/strong>; and it was inserted\u00a0very late. In short, a marginal note from the high middle ages jumped into the main body of the text.\u00a0The correct reading<\/strong> is<\/p>\n

There are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three agree. (NRSV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is only relevant to the Trinity (or the trinity<\/a>) in that it mentions God’s Spirit\/spirit; there’s no longer any statement that the Three are one god.\u00a0To our shame, this\u00a0corruption was\u00a0known to the great scholar Erasmus (1466-1536)<\/a>. But we still<\/em> have some people citing the corrupted version. This is a failure of biblical education<\/strong> in various churches since that time.<\/p>\n
