The characteristic thesis<\/strong> of unitarian Christianity<\/a> (aka Biblical Unitarianism, Christian Monotheism) is that the Father of Jesus just is the one God, Yahweh, and Jesus is someone else.<\/p>\n

This is assumed<\/strong> in this passage:<\/p>\n

Jesus said to her, \u201cDo not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, \u2018I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.\u2019 (John 20:17, ESV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Actually, it is consistently assumed in the entire New Testament – there is no difference between authors on this score. But here, it is especially close to the surface, as it were.<\/p>\n

And it is explicitly asserted<\/strong> in these:<\/p>\n

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, \u201cFather, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.\u00a0 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. (John 17:1-3, ESV)<\/p>\n

Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that \u201can idol has no real existence,\u201d and that \u201cthere is no God but one.\u201d For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth\u2014as indeed there are many \u201cgods\u201d and many \u201clords\u201d\u2014\u00a0 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. (1 Cor 8:4-6, ESV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The waters have been muddied<\/strong> by evangelical and Catholic apologists arguing for “the deity of Christ<\/a>,” and by some big name theologians like Bauckham and Wright arguing that in the last passage Paul “inserts Jesus into the Shema.” In this talk, after I give a quick logic lesson, I discuss how logic helps us to think clearly about these three passages.<\/p>\n
