He was an original thinker, a careful and deep scholar, and a lucid writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this episode I present in full <strong>his discussion of the prologue of the fourth gospel <\/strong>from his important book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/statement-believing-doctrines-Trinitarians-concerning\/dp\/1425561322\/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&amp;keywords=A+Statement+of+Reasons+for+not+Believing+the+Doctrines+of+Trinitarians%2C+Concerning+the+Nature+of+God+and+the+Person+of+Christ&amp;qid=1592276623&amp;sr=8-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Statement of Reasons for not Believing the Doctrines of Trinitarians, Concerning the Nature of God and the Person of Christ<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norton discusses<strong> the key word <em>logos <\/em>(&#8220;Word&#8221;)<\/strong> here, and how it functions in the theological thinking of this time. Key sources include Jewish wisdom literature and the writings of the Jewish philosopher Philo of Alexandria, who was roughly contemporary with Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explains why trinitarian interpretations don&#8217;t fit the passage at all. Then he asks whether John&#8217;s <em>logos <\/em>is a <strong>personification <\/strong>(treating something that&#8217;s not a person <em>as if<\/em> it were a person) or a <strong>hypostasization <\/strong>(something which one might suppose is a non-person but which is understood by the author as a person).
