This is how <strong>Eastern Orthodox<\/strong>\u00a0theologians\u00a0describe Christian salvation, and it is a common saying that this is distinctive of Eastern Christian theology, but <strong><em>not<\/em> of Western<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a title=\"the mp3 of trinities podcast episode 59\" href=\"http:\/\/trinities.org\/blog\/wp-content\/podcast\/trinities%20059%20-%20Dr%20Carl%20Mosser%20on%20salvation%20as%20deification.mp3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this episode<\/a>,<strong> <a title=\"Dr. Mosser's page at Notre Dame\" href=\"http:\/\/philreligion.nd.edu\/center-fellows\/visitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Carl Mosser<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(Associate Professor at Eastern University, on leave, and a Visiting Scholar at\u00a0the <a title=\"Center for Philosophy of Religion\" href=\"http:\/\/philreligion.nd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Philosophy of Religion<\/a> at the University of Notre Dame) <strong>challenges this assumption<\/strong>, taking us on a fascinating journey through the ancient and recent history of Christian theology. He&#8217;s working on<strong> two books<\/strong> on this topic &#8211; one historical, the other theological.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0argues that people now make this assumption in large part because of super heavyweight German scholar, Adolph <strong>von Harnack<\/strong> (1851-1930).
