podcast 229 – Buzzard and Hurtado on God and Jesus – Part 2

In this second part of their conversation (Part 1 here), Mr. Buzzard and Dr. Hurtado focus on how New Testament authors apply what were originally texts about Yahweh to Jesus.

What is the significance of this? Is this how they tell us, indirectly, that Jesus is Yahweh himself? Or is something else going on?

They also discuss Dr. Hurtado’s ideas that the NT shows a dyadic worship pattern, a triadic structure of God-talk, and that its authors enfranchise Jesus within biblical discourse about Yahweh.

As before, I comment here and there. Towards the end, I wonder what Dr. Hurtado thinks about this argument (discussed here, here, and here).

  1. God and Jesus differ.
  2. Things which differ are two (i.e. are not numerically identical)
  3. Therefore, God and Jesus are two (not numerically identical). (1, 2)
  4. For any x and y, x and y are the same god only if x and y are not two (i.e. are numerically identical).
  5. Therefore, God and Jesus are not the same god. (3,4)
  6. There is only one god.
  7. Therefore, either God is not a god, or Jesus is not a god. (5, 6)
  8. God is a god.
  9. Therefore, Jesus is not a god. (7,8)

I believe that Sir Anthony would accept the argument as sound. It seems to me that he and Dr. Hurtado should agree that 1-3 is sound. Does Dr. Hurtado also accept 4, 6, and 8? If so, he would be committed to the truth of 9.

  1. I found PC 229 to be one of the most useful you’ve offered in cogently tethering Jesus more closely to the Almighty as unique “agent” or “franchisee” than I have been able to understand him. Perhaps you can put on a podcast that more thoroughly develops this notion.

Thank you for the very great benefits your scholarship and podcasting extends to inquirers.
