podcast 313 – Weighing Channing Unitarianism

Play

We’ve heard quite a bit from the famous, learned, and eloquent early American unitarian preacher and author William Ellery Channing (1780-1842):

podcast 308 – Channing’s “Unitarian Christianity” – Part 1

podcast 309 – Channing’s “Unitarian Christianity” – Part 2

podcast 310 – Channing’s “Objections to Unitarian Christianity Considered”

podcast 311 – Channing’s “The Evidences of Revealed Religion”

podcast 312 – Channing’s “Likeness to God

In this episode I offer some thoughts, positive and negative, about Channing’s understanding of Christianity, including a few topics which the above lecture-sermons did not really touch on. Topics include: the breadth of his definition of “unitarian Christian” views, his arguments that the Bible doesn’t teach any Trinity or Incarnation theory, what sort of Trinity theories he actually objects to, his assumptions of divine immutability and impassibility, his anti-Calvinism, his defense of belief in early Christian miracles, his opposition to “man-made creeds,” his opposition to “emotional” religion, and his individualism.

Finally, we hear an eyewitness testimony to his conduct and character towards the end of his life.
